Lumin Health names Aakash Sathappan Brookline site director
Sathappan brings expertise in interventional psychiatry, ketamine treatment and clinical education to the role.

Massachusetts-based mental health care provider Lumin Health appointed Indian-origin medical professional Aakash Sathappan as site director of its Brookline location.
Sathappan will oversee clinical care at Lumin Health Brookline and support the team treating patients with treatment-resistant depression and related conditions in the Boston region.

In his new role, Sathappan will coordinate with referring providers and help ensure consistent, evidence-based care at the outpatient facility, which provides medically supervised ketamine treatment and insurance-covered esketamine (Spravato).
Sathappan is a board-certified psychiatrist with expertise in both pediatric and adult psychiatry. His clinical work focuses on interventional approaches for treatment-resistant conditions, with specialized training in ketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
He has a particular focus on ketamine treatment and authored guidelines for informed consent for ketamine use in adolescents with treatment-resistant depression.
“Many patients who seek this kind of care have already spent years trying to find something that works, often while feeling discouraged or overlooked,” Sathappan said. “What matters most is creating an environment where treatment is both clinically rigorous and deeply supportive. His appointment comes as Lumin Health provides medically supervised ketamine treatment and insurance-covered esketamine (Spravato) for treatment-resistant depression. The company said demand for the treatments has grown in recent years, with esketamine nasal spray FDA-approved and covered by most insurance plans.
Sathappan has been with Lumin Health since September 2024, when he joined the company as a part-time psychiatrist. He became its medical director in September 2025.
Before joining Lumin Health, Sathappan held clinical and academic positions at Boston Children’s Hospital. He was also a clinical fellow there and served as an instructor in psychiatry.
Sathappan also practices at Boston Children’s Hospital and serves on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, where he is a course director for psychiatry fellows. His work includes supervising psychiatry fellows and teaching medical students.
His research experience includes the National Institute of Mental Health, where he was one of 39 medical students selected nationwide for the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program. He conducted clinical research on non-invasive brain stimulation techniques for psychiatric disorders and helped develop clinical research protocols involving TMS.
Sathappan also worked as a research fellow at UC San Diego’s Laboratory of Pediatric Neurosciences, where he studied the cognitive consequences of neurodevelopmental disorders, including cystinosis.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, San Diego, in 2014, graduating magna cum laude. He later attended the UC San Diego School of Medicine and completed his residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
