The Boston Public Library (BPL) has appointed Indian-American culinary expert Suman Shah as its new chef-in-residence at the Nutrition Lab in the Shaw-Roxbury Branch.

Shah will lead cooking programs designed to strengthen nutritional literacy and encourage community engagement through food. Her residency will focus on the theme “How We Gather,” exploring the role of food and storytelling in bringing people together.

Programs will include cooking demonstrations, hands-on classes and educational resources covering cooking techniques, nutrition, cultural traditions and Boston history.

As part of the initiative, patrons will also have access to virtual, one-on-one “Gathering Guidance” sessions with Shah. The sessions will provide personalized assistance with menu planning and resources for hosting gatherings.

Shah is a culinary educator and founder of Fork on a Road, a business focused on seasonal cooking, cultural food traditions and spice-forward cuisine. She has spent the past eight years teaching hundreds of students through libraries, farmers’ markets, community education programs and private classes across the Boston area.

Drawing on her immigrant heritage and Ayurvedic principles, Shah promotes cooking with fresh spices and seasonal ingredients while emphasizing the connections between food, culture, wellness and community. Her work includes developing spice blends, vegetarian meal kits and hands-on cooking classes.

She is the third chef-in-residence appointed by the Boston Public Library. The program is part of the Nutrition Lab, which serves as BPL’s hub for nutritional literacy and provides opportunities for patrons to learn about healthy eating, meal preparation and practical life skills.

"We are excited to welcome Suman Shah, our third Chef-in-Residence, an initiative made possible through the generous contributions of our donors to the Boston Public Library Fund,” said Paula Sakey, executive director of the Boston Public Library Fund.

The chef-in-residence program is funded through private contributions to the Boston Public Library Fund, which supports initiatives aimed at keeping BPL’s programs accessible and free to the public.
