A new Indian street food restaurant, Delhi Belly, is preparing to open in Washington, D.C., bringing a casual dining concept inspired by the food and street culture of India.

The restaurant is the latest venture from Vikas Kakkar and Raj Manroy, who also own Virraaj, an Indian restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland. The concept grew from Kakkar and Manroy’s connection to the food and culture of India after decades of living in the United States.

The new venture is being positioned as a more casual and vibrant extension of their culinary concept, with a focus on Indian street food and flavors inspired by the country’s bustling food stalls and neighborhood eateries.

Delhi Belly announced its upcoming opening on social media, describing the restaurant as a destination for “bold flavors, sizzling favorites, spicy cravings and unforgettable Indian street food experiences.”

“From the royal kitchens of Virraaj—a name that echoes splendour, creativity, and cultural pride—comes a bold new adventure that trades silk tablecloths for street-side charm,” the restaurant says in its description.

The new restaurant is also designed to have a different atmosphere from Virraaj. Delhi Belly describes its setting as more colorful and informal, with graffiti-inspired walls intended to evoke the energy of India’s streets and food stalls.

The restaurant says its aim is to bring what it calls the “real India” to diners through food that combines nostalgia with a contemporary presentation. It draws on memories of Indian street food, including samosas, gol gappa, chaat and chai.

A date of opening has not yet been announced, with the owners hoping to open this month at 1560 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington D.C.
