How one minute changed our lives: Wife of Indian American Jeweler who was robbed

Dear Editor,
On Saturday, August 8, at approximately 7:30 p.m., our lives changed in a matter of seconds.
My husband, Sonu Chauhan, was assisting a customer inside our jewelry store when four to five individuals wearing full-face masks suddenly rushed into the store. Two of them were carrying sledgehammers and immediately began smashing the jewelry display cases. The others quickly grabbed jewelry trays and stuffed them into large plastic bags.
The attack unfolded with shocking speed. Startled by the sound of the glass shattering, Sonu instinctively ran toward the office. The entire robbery lasted only 30 to 45 seconds, leaving no time to react or process what was happening.
During the robbery, one suspect stood by the entrance acting as a lookout, another remained in the driver’s seat of the getaway vehicle, while the remaining individuals focused on stealing the jewelry trays as quickly as possible.
Our 18-year-old son was also in the store that evening. Fortunately, he had stepped away moments before the robbers entered, and he was not in their immediate path. We cannot help but think that, being young and full of courage, he might have instinctively tried to resist or intervene if he had been directly confronted—something that could have placed him in serious danger. We are incredibly grateful that no one was physically harmed.
However, the emotional impact has been profound. After the robbers fled, Sonu was left in shock, struggling to comprehend what had just happened. The robbery resulted in the loss of a significant amount of our inventory, representing years of hard work and dedication.
While we are thankful that our family and everyone in the store escaped without physical injuries, this traumatic event has left us with lasting anxiety, emotional distress, and a constant sense of fear. It has affected not only our business but also our family’s sense of safety and peace of mind. Recovering from the emotional and financial impact of this robbery will take considerable time.
