New York-based AI-native mortgage and home equity finance platform, Better Home & Finance Holding Company has announced that its founder, Vishal Garg has stepped down as the chief executive officer.

The company announced on Aug. 3 that its board of directors appointed board member Daniel Lewis as interim CEO, effective immediately. Garg will remain on the company’s board and work with Lewis to facilitate the leadership transition.

Garg said the company had reached an “important inflection point” and that the time was right for new leadership. During his tenure, the company expanded its technology-driven mortgage platform and helped more than 600,000 customers purchase or refinance homes, representing more than $110 billion in loan volume.

“I have come to know Daniel quite well, and I am confident he is the right person to lead the Company through this important time in its evolution," Garg said.

Garg founded Better.com in 2016 with the goal of using technology to simplify and modernize the home-buying and mortgage process. Under his leadership, the company developed an AI-driven mortgage platform designed to automate traditionally time-consuming aspects of loan origination and home financing.

Before founding the firm, Garg established himself as an entrepreneur and investor with a focus on financial technology, data science and consumer-focused businesses. He founded 1/0 Capital, an early-stage investment firm that backed companies across these sectors. The firm’s notable seed-stage investments included Paribus, Ramp, Trumid, Creditas, Climb Credit and Notable, among others.

Garg began his entrepreneurial career in 1999 when, at the age of 21, he co-founded MyRichUncle.com with an initial investment of $30,000. The company became one of the early online student lending platforms in the United States and grew to become the fourth-largest publicly traded private student loan company in the country.

Before launching MyRichUncle, Garg worked as an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley & Co., gaining experience in financial markets and investment banking. His early career in finance, followed by his ventures in student lending and early-stage technology investment, laid the foundation for his later work in transforming the mortgage industry through Better.com.
