Sunny Eappen joins Assort Health as chief medical officer
In his new role, Eappen will guide the safe development and deployment of AI to improve patient access and healthcare operations.

San Francisco-based healthcare AI company Assort Health has appointed Indian-origin healthcare executive and anesthesiologist Sunny Eappen as its first chief medical officer.
Eappen will oversee the clinical development of Assort Health's artificial intelligence platform, helping guide how the company designs and deploys AI tools for hospitals and health systems. His focus will include improving patient access to care, optimizing clinical capacity and ensuring the technology aligns with real-world healthcare operations.
“Nearly every health system is trying to solve the same fundamental problem: how to connect patients to the right provider without unnecessary friction. I’ve spent much of my career trying to solve this problem from inside health systems. We have more patients who need care than our workforce can serve, which means we must use the current breakthroughs in AI to solve these problems right now,” Eappen said in a statement.

“I joined Assort because its platform can learn across organizations and specialties in a way no individual health system can replicate on its own. Assort creates an extraordinary opportunity to expand access by overcoming the obstacles that patients, staff, and clinicians currently face in connecting patients and their caregivers,” Eappen added.
Eappen brings more than 30 years of experience in clinical care and healthcare leadership. Most recently, he led the University of Vermont Health Network, as its former president and chief executive officer of the University of Vermont Health Network, a six-hospital academic health system serving about 1 million patients across Vermont and northern New York.
Before that, he served as chief medical officer and senior vice president of medical affairs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and previously held leadership roles at Massachusetts Eye and Ear.
Assort Health said Eappen's appointment is part of a broader expansion of its health systems leadership team as hospitals increasingly adopt AI to improve patient access and operational efficiency.
“He’s experienced firsthand the operational complexity behind every patient interaction, from scheduling and referrals to capacity planning and care delivery. He knows AI only matters if it helps health systems see more patients without creating more work for the people delivering care. His clinical judgment and operating experience will shape how we build,” said Jon Wang, founder and co-CEO of Assort Health.
Eappen completed his medical degree at the University of Chicago, earned an MBA from Yale University and remains a clinical professor of anesthesiology at the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine.
The San Francisco-based company develops AI agents that support patient-facing administrative tasks, including appointment scheduling, referrals, care gap closure, medication refills, document processing and payments.
