Lilly's library selects Sheila Marikar's ‘Incidentals’ as August pick
Marikar's latest novel follows a luxury vacation that spirals into a murder mystery.

Indo-Canadian creator Lilly Singh has selected Indian American author Sheila Yasmin Marikar's novel Incidentals as the August pick for her Lilly's Library book club.
Published by Little A in March, Incidentals follows Sarah and Sam, a married couple who travel to the Maldives in hopes of repairing their relationship. Their anniversary getaway takes a dark turn after they befriend an affluent older couple at a luxury resort and a dead body is discovered in the surrounding waters.

Although authorities rule the death an accident, Sarah begins to suspect their new acquaintances are hiding dangerous secrets, turning the tropical vacation into a psychological thriller.
Singh announced the selection on Instagram, describing Incidentals as "the perfect late-summer read" for August.
"One last epic vacation," Singh wrote. "Before life shifts, before the next chapter begins, there's one final getaway... Our #lillyslibrary August book club pick is Incidentals by @sheilaym, and it's the perfect late-summer read to soak up before the season comes to a close."
She added, "We can't wait to experience this story together and hear everything you think along the way."
Marikar is the author of Friends in Napa and The Goddess Effect, both instant No. 1 Amazon bestsellers. Beyond fiction, she has built a career in journalism, with bylines in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Economist, Fortune, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Vogue. Her New York Times Magazine profile of chef Gaggan Anand was selected for the 2021 edition of Best American Food Writing.
Before becoming a full-time author, Marikar spent nearly eight years at ABC News, where she worked as a producer, reporter, and entertainment editor. A graduate of Cornell University with a degree in history, Marikar is based in Los Angeles. Her father is from Kerala.
Founded by Singh in 2021, Lilly's Library spotlights books by South Asian authors across genres and has grown into a community focused on amplifying South Asian voices in publishing. Previous selections have included fiction, memoirs, and thrillers by writers from across the South Asian diaspora.
