Battle lines are set for the knockout round of the FIH Hockey World Cup for Junior Men after eight teams pushed through the pool stage, a stretch that delivered both blowouts and tightly fought contests.
Six group winners—Germany, India, Argentina, Spain, the Netherlands, and France—and the two best second-place teams, New Zealand and Belgium, advanced to the last eight. The quarterfinals will be played on December 5.
India closed the pool stage with a comfortable 5-0 win over Switzerland, securing its third straight victory to finish atop Pool B and move into the quarterfinals. The loss was Switzerland’s first, leaving it second with six points. Chile finished third with three points, and Oman placed fourth.
India opened sharply, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on two goals from Manmeet Singh in the 2nd and 11th minutes and a penalty-corner strike from Sharda Nand Tiwari.
The two-time champions lacked edge in the second quarter but added a fourth goal in the 28th minute through Arshdeep Singh. Player of the Match Tiwari converted another penalty corner in the 54th to finish with a brace.
“Happy with the result, but there are a lot of areas to improve,” India coach PR Sreejesh said. “The tournament starts from the next match (quarter-final) onwards. So it’s important for us to focus on those areas.”
The quarterfinals will feature Spain vs New Zealand, France vs Germany, Netherlands vs Argentina, and India vs Belgium.
Spain opened the day by routing Namibia 13-0 in Madurai to complete an unbeaten run.
