US Republican Senator Bernie Moreno introduced a bill seeking to end dual citizenship for all American citizens.Introduced on Dec. 1 the bill seeks to amend current US law that allows individuals to retain other citizenships, even after obtaining an American citizenship.

The bill, called the  Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, noted that obtaining US citizenship and pledging the oath of allegiance is an honor. Colombia-born Moreno had previously renounced his Colombian citizenship.

Moreno said in a statement, "One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so."

The bill argues that dual citizenships "may create conflicts of interest and divided loyalties," and claims that ending the practice of dual citizenship is in "national interest".

If the bill is cleared, all US citizens with dual citizenship will have to choose one citizenship within 1 year, failure to do so would result in the automatic forfeiture of their US citizenship. Additionally, individuals obtaining a foreign citizenship, their US citizenship will be revoked.

The Indian constitution does not provide for dual citizenship currently, however, diaspora organizations have repeatedly urged the Indian government to make provisions for dual citizenship. Recently, IndUS Canada, a leading forum representing 79 prominent organisations of the Indian diaspora, reiterated this demand and called for an amendment to Indian law.
