New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has formally sought India’s assistance in extraditing Indian national Nazeer Hameed, who is accused in a double homicide case. Murphy recently wrote to India’s ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, urging cooperation on the request.
In March 2017, a man returned to his New Jersey apartment and discovered his 38-year-old wife, Sasikala Narra, and their 6-year-old son, Anish, stabbed to death. Authorities alleged that Hameed, a 38-year-old Indian national who was working in the United States on a visa, returned to India six months after committing the crime.
Writing on behalf of the State of New Jersey, Murphy cited the extradition treaty between the two countries and urged Indian authorities to consider the request.
