Amish Shah leads Arizona CD-1 Democratic primary
The Democratic winner will face Republican nominee Jay Feely in the Nov. 3 general election.

Indian American physician and former Arizona state Rep. Amish Shah has a significant lead in the Democratic primary for Arizona's 1st Congressional District.
With over 80 percent of the votes counted as of July 22, Shah leads with 40.5 percent according to the Associated Press estimates.

He secured 26,892 votes, ahead of former television news anchor and the democratic party’s endorsed candidate Marlene Galán-Woods, who received 22,320 votes, or 33.6 percent. Jonathan Treble was third with 11,547 votes (17.4 percent), while Rick McCartney received 5,643 votes (8.5 percent).
The Democratic primary was a rematch between Shah and Galán-Woods, who also sought the party's nomination for the seat in 2024. Shah won the nomination that year before losing the general election to Republican Rep. David Schweikert, receiving 48 percent of the vote.
The race has drawn national attention because Arizona's 1st Congressional District is an open seat following Schweikert's successful bid for governor.
The district, which includes Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and parts of north Phoenix, is considered one of the country's most competitive congressional battlegrounds and is expected to be closely watched in the fight for control of the U.S. House.
A practicing emergency physician, Shah represented Arizona's 5th Legislative District in the state House from 2019 until resigning in 2024 to focus on his congressional campaign.
Before entering politics, he worked as an emergency room doctor in the Phoenix area and has frequently highlighted healthcare, public education and affordable housing among his campaign priorities.
On the Republican side, former NFL kicker Jay Feely won the GOP nomination and will face the Democratic nominee in the November general election.
The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, when the Democratic and Republican nominees will compete for Arizona's 1st Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
