Jay Bhattacharya launches NIH bio genesis mission

The initiative aims to halve the time it takes for scientific discoveries to reach patients.

National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya on July 22 launched the Bio Genesis Mission, a new initiative aimed at speeding the development of medical discoveries.

The Bio Genesis Mission is the NIH's contribution to the White House-led Genesis Mission, a national effort to harness artificial intelligence and advanced computing to accelerate scientific research and strengthen U.S. leadership in emerging technologies.

Bhattacharya said the initiative aims to build a "future-ready, intelligent biomedical research ecosystem" through technology, policy, and partnership innovation, with the goal of cutting in half the time it takes for scientific discoveries to reach patients over the next decade.



"Patients living with cancer, chronic disease, or a rare condition don't experience research timelines as an abstraction, they experience them as years spent waiting for answers," Bhattacharya said. "The Bio Genesis Mission is our answer to that wait."

He said the initiative will pair AI and advanced computing with new approaches to policy, governance, and partnerships to help researchers, institutions, data, and infrastructure work together more effectively "so that promising science moves at the speed patients deserve."

The mission will focus on predicting the behavior of living systems, scaling U.S. biomanufacturing, detecting biological threats earlier, using AI to develop new treatments for pediatric cancer, accelerating drug discovery and repurposing, and advancing research into the root causes of chronic disease.

Bhattacharya said NIH has aligned more than $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2026 obligated funding and planned fiscal year 2027 funding with these priorities. Additional Bio Genesis Mission funding opportunities will be announced in the coming months.

Addressing concerns about AI in biomedical research, Bhattacharya said the initiative is built on responsible governance and data security from the outset.

"AI will not replace the scientific judgment, rigor, and peer review that have always driven medical progress, rather it will extend their reach," he said.
