The Consulate General of India in Seattle, in partnership with the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., hosted its first gathering honoring veterans of the Indian Armed Forces and their families from the Greater Seattle area on July 12, according to a post on the Consulate's official X account.

The Consulate described the event as a celebration recognizing veterans for their service, sacrifice and continued commitment to India. In its post, the mission thanked those who attended and said the gathering reflected that service to the nation does not end with military retirement but continues through mentorship, community leadership and the transmission of values to future generations.

Anurag Dubey, a retired commander of the Indian Navy, said the event at the Consulate's headquarters brought together veterans of the Indian Armed Forces from across the region. He credited the initiative to the Consul General of India in Seattle and the Indian Military Attaché based at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., saying it provided an opportunity for veterans to reconnect and strengthen ties within the community.

Another veteran who attended said it was a privilege to be part of the group that helped organize what he described as the first event of its kind at the Consulate. He said it was rewarding to see the initiative come together and to witness veterans gathering under one roof.

A third veteran described the event as a reminder of the strong bonds shared by members of the Indian diaspora. He said it was encouraging to see former service personnel reconnect and added that the gathering reinforced the feeling that they remain closely connected to their roots despite living overseas.

The Seattle gathering follows similar outreach efforts by Indian diplomatic missions in North America aimed at engaging retired members of the Indian Armed Forces. In November 2024, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver organized a veterans' outreach program in Calgary, where officials issued hundreds of life certificates to Indian Armed Forces veterans and other pensioners at the office of the Indian Ex-Servicemen Immigration Association, according to a post by the Vancouver Consulate on X.

In India, the Ministry of Defence observes Armed Forces Veterans' Day every Jan. 14 with rallies, commemorative events and wreath-laying ceremonies across the country. The day marks the retirement of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, in 1953. Since 2016, the annual observance has honored the contributions of ex-servicemen and their families.

The event also reflects the Consulate General of India in Seattle's broader engagement with the Indian diaspora since relocating to its current premises in the former Federal Reserve Building at 1015 Second Ave. in August 2025. The mission has expanded cultural, business and community outreach across its nine-state consular jurisdiction, which includes Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
