An ownership group led by Indian-American technology billionaire Vinod Khosla has agreed to purchase the Seattle Seahawks,  a professional American football team based in Seattle in a deal valued at $9.6 billion, according to the NFL team.

The transaction, announced July 11, would make the Khosla family the controlling owners of the reigning Super Bowl champions, subject to approval by NFL owners.

The Estate of Paul G. Allen said it had entered into a formal sale agreement with a group led by the Khosla family. Khosla, 71, is the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and currently holds a stake in the ownership group of the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seahawks said the Khosla family will become the team's controlling owner once the transaction is completed.

"We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks," Khosla said in a statement.

"We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere."

The sale must still be approved by NFL owners before it can be finalized.

Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who owned the Seahawks, died in 2018. His estate said trust executor Jody Allen, Paul's sister, will donate all proceeds from the sale of the franchise to charity, in keeping with Allen's directives.

Khosla also commented on the agreement in a social media post.

"Excited to be part of this great franchise," he wrote.

"Also excited to see the money all go to a non-profit. No other comments till sale is final."

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed by the parties. However, ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that the purchase price is $9.612 billion, which would make it the highest price ever paid for an NFL franchise.

The previous record NFL franchise sale was the Washington Commanders, which sold for $6.05 billion in 2023.

Before the transaction can be completed, the Khosla family must divest its ownership stake in the rival San Francisco 49ers. According to ESPN, that process is expected to be completed before an NFL league meeting scheduled for next month.

Once approved by league owners and after the required divestment is completed, the agreement will transfer control of one of the NFL's most successful franchises to the Khosla family while directing the proceeds from the sale to charitable causes, as specified by Paul Allen's estate.
