An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison after being convicted of causing the death of a pedestrian in a high-speed hit-and-run in east London, the UK's Metropolitan Police said.
Mayan Hirani, 26, was sentenced at 'Woolwich Crown Court' in London on Friday after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of the collision.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the incident occurred in March 2024 in Ilford, east London. The victim, Mohammed Furuk Ahmed, had parked his vehicle to make a food delivery when he was struck while crossing the road.
Investigators said Hirani was driving a Range Rover at between 64 and 68 mph, more than twice the speed limit for the area, when the vehicle hit Ahmed.
Ahmed suffered "catastrophic injuries" in the collision. Emergency services responded to the scene, but he died in hospital the following day.
Police said officers identified the Range Rover involved through CCTV footage and "extensive investigative work," tracing it to a garage in east London.
"Hirani later admitted he had been the driver," the Metropolitan Police said.
Detective Constable Tristan Hunter, who led the investigation, said the victim's family continues to live with the impact of the fatal crash.
"Our thoughts remain with Mr Ahmed's family and loved ones, who continue to live with the devastating consequences of his death," Hunter said.
"While no sentence can undo the pain caused by Mr Ahmed's passing, I hope this outcome provides some measure of justice for his family and demonstrates our commitment to holding dangerous drivers accountable," he said.
The Metropolitan Police said Hirani's conviction followed an investigation that relied on CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the driver and establish his involvement in the fatal collision.
Hirani will serve a prison sentence of six years and nine months following the ruling by 'Woolwich Crown Court'. The case stemmed from the March 2024 crash in Ilford, where Ahmed was struck while making a food delivery and later died from his injuries.
