Canada will host the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. The nation hosted a record-breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015, proving its credentials for hosting high-quality, prestigious sporting events.
Canada has qualified for two World Cup finals in its history: in 1986, when the tournament was hosted by fellow 2026 co-host Mexico, and in Qatar in 2022. Just as hosting the 1994 World Cup proved to be a turning point in the trajectory of soccer in the United States, 2026 will be pivotal in developing a lasting legacy for the future of Canadian soccer.
The Canadian Premier League was founded in 2017 and played its first season in 2019, featuring eight clubs. The league has formed an important part of the roadmap to the FIFA World Cup 2026. Three Canadian teams compete in Major League Soccer, including CF Montréal, Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps, representing the country's three largest metropolitan areas.
