Indian American journalist and author Sadanand Dhume has joined the New York-based think tank, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) as senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia in its David Rockefeller Studies Program.
In his new role, Dhume will focus on the region’s political economy and foreign policy, adding to CFR’s research and analysis on South Asia and its significance for U.S. foreign policy.

Announcing the appointment, CFR senior vice president Shannon K. O’Neil said Dhume’s experience as both a journalist and scholar would strengthen the organization’s expertise on the region.
“I am pleased to welcome Sadanand to our Studies Program,” O’Neil said. “Sadanand’s distinctive experience as a reporter and scholar covering South Asia will provide integral insight into this important and dynamic region and implications for U.S. foreign policy there.”
Dhume is the author of the biweekly East Is East column in The Wall Street Journal, where he writes about South Asian politics, economics, foreign policy, and the South Asian diaspora. He previously worked as a foreign correspondent for Far Eastern Economic Review and The Wall Street Journal Asia, reporting from India and Indonesia.
He has also been a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Asia Society and has testified before the U.S. Congress on U.S.-India relations and broader U.S. policy toward South Asia.
Dhume is the author of My Friend the Fanatic: Travels With a Radical Islamist and an upcoming book, Tinderbox: The Unpredictable Rise and Uncertain Future of Modern India, which examines the political and economic transformation underway in the world’s most populous nation.
His articles have appeared in publications including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The National Interest, National Review, Commentary, and The Wilson Quarterly. He has also appeared as a commentator on CNN, PBS, NPR, BBC, Al Jazeera, and several Indian television networks.
Dhume earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Delhi, a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia Journalism School, and a master’s degree in public policy and international affairs from Princeton University. He is based in Washington, D.C.
