Rakhi Israni, a Democratic candidate for California’s 14th Congressional District, was endorsed by Sunil Varghese, co-chair of Union City’s Sales Tax and Utility Users’ Tax Oversight Committee.

Announcing the endorsement, Israni said Varghese “has spent years making sure Union City's dollars work for Union City's families” and described him as a South Asian community leader who has “built bridges between neighbors, generations, and institutions.”

In a statement featured in campaign material, Varghese, president of the Malayalee Association of Northern California, said, “I have seen firsthand that Rakhi Israni brings the kind of fresh perspective CA-14 needs. Her leadership is rooted in the community and guided by a clear understanding of what helps families truly thrive. Combining an entrepreneurial drive, the dedication of an educator, and a strong sense of service, she offers a practical, results-oriented approach that puts people first.”

He added, “I am proud to endorse Rakhi Israni and respectfully ask for your support.”

The Varghese endorsement adds to earlier backing for Israni, including from U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, according to her campaign.

Israni’s campaign said she raised more than $2 million in the first ten weeks of her run, surpassing the combined total of other candidates in the open-seat race. She also launched her first television advertisement in April as part of her early outreach effort.

The general election for California’s 14th Congressional District is scheduled for Nov. 3.
