Columbia appoints Pallavi Gogoi to head business journalism fellowship
In her new role, she will lead the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship, overseeing advanced business journalism training and professional development for experienced journalists.

Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism has appointed Indian-American veteran business journalist Pallavi Gogoi as executive director of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism.
Gogoi will assume the role on Aug. 17, succeeding Robert Smith, who has led the fellowship since 2021. The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship combines advanced journalism coursework at Columbia Journalism School with core MBA classes at Columbia Business School, along with weekly seminars featuring media and business leaders.
As executive director, Gogoi will oversee one of the journalism school's flagship professional development programs, which for more than five decades has provided experienced journalists with advanced training in business, economics, finance and technology.

Gogoi brings more than 25 years of journalism experience spanning six major news organizations. She has served as NPR's chief business editor for nearly a decade and previously held reporting and editing roles at CNN, The Associated Press, USA Today, BusinessWeek, and Dow Jones/The Wall Street Journal.
In addition to her newsroom career, Gogoi has taught courses on economic narratives at Columbia Journalism School and Princeton University.
“I believe that economics undergirds every decision in life, which is why I am a torchbearer for journalism that sheds light on this topic,” said Gogoi. “I’m so thrilled about bringing a lifetime of mission-driven work to this role.”
Jelani Cobb, dean and Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, said Gogoi's background as both a newsroom leader and educator makes her well suited to lead the fellowship.
“Pallavi’s experience as both a newsroom leader and an educator gives her a keen understanding of what working journalists need from a program like Knight-Bagehot. She has the vision to honor what has made the Fellowship distinctive, and we look forward to seeing her build on that legacy and create new opportunities for its fellows,” said Jelani Cobb, dean and Henry R. Luce professor of journalism.
She graduated from Delhi University, with a master's degree in English Literature from Hindu College, and a bachelor's degree from SGTB Khalsa College.
The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship enters its sixth decade with a continued focus on strengthening journalists' understanding of business and economics to support informed public reporting.
