Nithya Raman touts housing wins after committee removal
Highlighting key legislative victories during her chairmanship, she said that under her leadership, the council passed the strongest renter protections in Los Angeles in 40 years.

Councilmember and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman has released a formal statement defending her record and expressing pride in her committee's work, following her claims that her removal as chair of the Los Angeles City Council's Housing and Homelessness Committee was an act of "political retaliation" by Mayor Karen Bass.
Releasing a statement on committee changes, Raman called her tenure heading the influential committee "an honor…during a time of real challenge and turbulence."
Highlighting key legislative victories during her chairmanship, she said that under her leadership, the council passed the strongest renter protections in Los Angeles in 40 years.
“This included universal Just Cause eviction protections, the largest city in America to pass them — and lowered rent increases in rent-stabilized units, impacting more than a million people,” she said.
She pointed that during an acute housing shortage, her committee cracked down on illegal Airbnbs and pushed to make it easier and faster to build desperately needed new housing.
“For the very first time in the city, we established an office for oversight over our homelessness dollars backed by clear performance data, and used that data to fill thousands of empty shelter beds and permanent supportive housing units, and utilize every federal housing voucher we received,” she said in the statement.

Raman said that “while there is much more work to do to fix a very broken system,” she is “proud of the work” her leadership has been able to do in the committee.
“We did all of this in partnership with community groups and residents who showed up and raised their voices on behalf of a city that was struggling,” she said.
She underlined that housing affordability and homelessness are among the most urgent challenges facing Los Angeles and they demand committed leadership.
“It is my hope that the Council will continue to push for the progress that Angelenos deserve,” she said.

Raman earlier claimed that she has been stripped of her role as chair of the Council's influential Housing and Homelessness Committee in “political retaliation” by Mayor Bass following her call for an independent audit of the city's homelessness response.
In a video posted to X, Raman accused the mayor's administration of shielding signature programs from oversight while citywide homelessness continues to rise.
“I called for an audit of our homelessness programs in Los Angeles and now have been removed as the chair of the Housing and Homelessness Committee," Raman said. "I might be getting punished for running against Mayor Bass, but Angelenos are the ones who are paying the price for these political games,” she said.
