A bodycam video of an Indian-origin woman breaking down during police questioning after being caught shoplifting at a Target store in the United States has gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred on Jan. 15, but the footage was uploaded last week on YouTube by a channel called Police Release under the title “When a Serial Target Shoplifter is Finally Caught Red-Handed.”

The video, which captures the woman breaking down in an interrogation room, highlights her struggle to communicate in English, as she tells officers that her primary language is Gujarati and confirms that she is from India.

According to reports, the Kent Municipal Court later cleared the woman of theft charges in March 2025.

Social media responses have been mixed, with some users criticising her actions and calling for strict measures, while others questioned the public sharing of the footage given that the case had already been resolved in court.

The controversy has gained further attention within the Indian diaspora in the United States, where previous incidents of shoplifting have already drawn scrutiny.

In July, following the arrest of another Indian woman for allegedly attempting to steal goods worth over $1,300 from a Target store in Illinois, the United States Embassy in India issued a warning that even minor infractions could result in immediate visa revocation or long-term entry bans.
