Lewiston Mayor backs Nirav Shah for Maine governor

The former public health official is among the Democrats vying for an open seat in one of Maine’s most closely watched statewide contests.

Democrat Nirav Shah announced the endorsement of Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline, strengthening his campaign for Governor of Maine.

In a statement released by the campaign, Sheline said Shah had demonstrated an ability to lead and deliver results.

Sheline said Maine needed leadership that would “stand up, fight back, and deliver results for all Mainers,” adding that he was “proud to endorse Dr. Nirav Shah for governor.”



“Lewiston and Maine are at a crossroads, and we need a governor who can meet this moment,” Sheline said. “Dr. Shah has proven he can deliver.”

Reacting to the endorsement, Shah said, “He led Lewiston through incredibly challenging moments with strength, compassion, and a deep commitment to his community,” in a post on X.

“His leadership reflects the very best of Maine, and I’m proud to stand alongside him as we work to build a more affordable, healthier, and stronger future for our state,” he added.

Shah has secured endorsements from South Asians for America (SAFA), Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett, Indian American Impact, and the 314 Action Fund, which backs candidates with science and medical backgrounds.

Since entering the race inOctober 2025 Shah’s campaign has reported early fundraising activity, raising about $275,000 in the first week and reporting more than $500,000 in total contributions in its initial filing.

The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 9, followed by the general election on Nov. 3.
