Shah took to X to announce this endorsement, which adds to the growing list of backing from groups and organizations that represent the Indian American and South Asian diaspora.

In his post on X, Shah mentioned that he understands the importance of good leadership, especially for communities that have their share of struggles to build a better future, and wrote,

“I'm proud to have the endorsement of South Asians for America. I know firsthand the sacrifices families make to build a better future, and I know how important it is to have leaders who see, understand, and fight for those communities.”

Shah then addressed the current situation of immigrants under the Trump administration in Maine and across the nation and added,

“Here in Maine, and across our country, we are at a moment where Donald Trump is targeting immigrants and dividing our country. We need to come together around our shared values and build a future that is more affordable, more inclusive, and more just for everyone.”

“That’s the campaign we’re running, and I’m grateful to have South Asians for America with us in this fight,” concluded Shah.

Harini Krishnan, co-founder and co-national director of South Asians for America, extended support for Shah’s campaign and said,

"Dr. Nirav Shah is a proven leader who has dedicated his career to protecting public health and serving others. As the son of immigrants from India, he brings a deeply personal understanding of both the challenges and the promise of this country.”

“We are proud to support his campaign to lead the state of Maine."

Shah, former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, entered the 2026 gubernatorial race in October 2025, drawing on his public health leadership record and experience managing the state’s pandemic response.

He has emerged as one of several contenders in a crowded Democratic primary, which also includes Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former state legislative leaders, and businessman Angus King III.

The primary is slated for June 9, with the general election set for Nov. 3 to choose a successor to term-limited Gov. Janet Mills.
