Wudbhav Sankar / Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) announced that Indian American pediatric orthopedic surgeon Wudbhav Sankar will assume the role of chief of its Orthopedic Center effective July 1.
Sankar will succeed John M. “Jack” Flynn, who is stepping down from the chief’s position for medical reasons after more than a decade in the role. Flynn, who has been with CHOP for 30 years, will remain on staff.

N. Scott Adzick, surgeon-in-chief at CHOP noted that Sankar’s appointment positions the center to continue strengthening its national and global standing in pediatric orthopedic care.
Currently director of the Young Adult Hip Preservation Program, Sankar leads the Hip Disorders Program at CHOP. His clinical practice spans hip disorders, spinal deformity, pediatric trauma, and recovery-focused care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
His areas of expertise include developmental dysplasia of the hip, femoroacetabular impingement, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and scoliosis.
Since joining CHOP in 2009, Sankar has contributed to several clinical and programmatic advances, including nontraditional bracing approaches for infants who do not respond to Pavlik harness therapy, intra- and postoperative blood-flow assessment techniques for dislocated hips, and the introduction of in-clinic ultrasound to expedite diagnosis.
He also played a key role in developing CHOP’s Scoliosis Rapid Recovery Pathway, which emphasizes early mobilization and reduced opioid use, enabling many patients to be discharged within days after major spine surgery.
Flynn credited Sankar with helping elevate the standard of care at the institution, citing his leadership in clinical innovation, education, and outcomes for children with hip and spinal disorders.
“I’m deeply grateful to Dr. Flynn for his visionary leadership, mentorship, and tireless commitment to excellence,” Sankar said. “I’m honored to assume the role of CHOP’s Orthopedic Chief at a program known for its diligence, compassion, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.”
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Sankar is a professor of orthopedic surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as director of orthopedic fellowship at CHOP, which is recognized as one of the nation’s leading fellowship training programs.
Sankar earned a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Cornell University and a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
He completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, followed by pediatric orthopedic fellowships at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Shriners Hospitals for Children in Los Angeles, and advanced training in adolescent and young adult hip preservation at Boston Children’s Hospital.
