The Trump administration confirmed Aug.19 that three U.S. warships carrying 4,000 Marines are headed to Venezuela, part of an escalation against the regime of Nicolás Maduro that the White House branded a “narco-terror cartel.”

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitte said President Trump is prepared to use “every element of American power” to combat drug trafficking and challenge Maduro’s legitimacy. “The Maduro regime is not the legitimate government of Venezuela. It is a narco-terror cartel,” she told reporters. “In Maduro, it is the view of this administration he is a fugitive head of this cartel who has been indicted in the United States for trafficking drugs into the country.”
