Jeyamohan’s stories bring hidden India to light

New India Abroad spoke to renowned Indian writer Jeyamohan and his translator Priyamvada Ramkumar about their new book ‘Stories Of The True.’

Published on Aug.12, 2025, ‘Stories Of The True’ is an English translation of a collection of Tamil short stories, penned by renowned Indian writer Jeyamohan in just 40 days, reimagining the lives of real people—from a peace activist to an elephant doctor—all striving for something greater. The stories blend the broad strokes of politics and caste with the quiet internal struggles of the characters. 

We spoke to Jeyamohan and his translator Priyamvada Ramkumar to discuss the new English translation of his book, ‘Stories of the True’ (Aram in Tamil). Our conversation explores the significant role of literature in a democratic society, the complexities of modern India, and the challenging yet important act of translating cultural nuance.
