Trump Administration Eyes Federal Stake in Intel to Boost Chip Supply

The idea of the government taking an ownership stake in a major semiconductor firm is unprecedented in recent U.S. policy.

The White House confirmed Aug.19 that it is considering taking a direct equity stake in Intel as part of a broader plan to reshore semiconductor production and safeguard U.S. supply chains.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said a 10 percent federal stake is under discussion in exchange for federal grants. “It’s a creative idea that has never been done before to ensure we are both reshoring these critical supply chains while also gaining something for the American taxpayer,” she told reporters here.
