Surrey Police discuss extortion crisis with Punjabis

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) leadership and members of the Punjabi Press Club convened at the SPS Headquarters to discuss the department's response to the ongoing extortion crisis.
According to a statement posted by the Surrey Police, the meeting included a question-and-answer session with Chief Constable Norm Lipinski, who addressed concerns raised by members of the Punjabi community.

Chief Lipinski discussed the police department’s evolving strategy to investigate extortion cases and the proactive work being carried out under Project Assurance, a program launched by SPS to address the rise in extortion threats across the city.
Project Assurance includes targeted patrols in areas considered at risk, community outreach initiatives, and dedicated victim-support services aimed at helping individuals who report extortion threats.
Police say the initiative also involves surveillance, vehicle checks, and safety planning for victims and their families.
Authorities have reported a growing number of extortion cases in Surrey, with dozens of investigations opened in 2026 alone, many involving threats or violence directed at businesses and members of the South Asian community.
The Punjabi Press Club represents journalists working across Punjabi-language newspapers, television, radio, and digital platforms that serve Canada’s Punjabi-speaking diaspora.
