Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman, who is running for mayor, blamed City Hall for blocking affordable housing projects amid the city’s housing crisis.

Standing in an abandoned plot, Raman said in a campaign video, "This empty lot is supposed to be 350 units of affordable housing,” but is currently “a home for weeds and trash.”

She argued that the project stalled “not because we didn't have the money,” but because “the city of LA fought to stop it from being built.”

Raman claims the city is pursuing legal action against similar developments across Los Angeles even as housing affordability worsens. “In fact, the city is actually going to court to stop affordable housing like this from being built all over LA,” she was quoted as saying in the video.

According to Raman, local residents are “crowding into apartments, sleeping in their car, or leaving LA entirely" amid the cost-of-living challenge. “Every Angeleno knows it's too expensive to live here and that we have to act now to fix it,” she says in the video, asking, “So why doesn't City Hall?”

If elected, Raman says her administration would take immediate steps to remove barriers to housing construction. She also pledged to redirect public spending away from legal challenges against housing projects.

“Instead of wasting public dollars on lawsuits, I'll use that money to make LA more affordable for you,” Raman asserted, positioning housing affordability as a central issue in her mayoral campaign.
