Taranjit Singh Sandhu appointed Lt. Gov of Delhi
Veteran diplomat with decades of experience in global diplomacy assumes constitutional role in the national capital.

Former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
The appointment was announced as part of a broader gubernatorial reshuffle issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan. The order stated that the appointments will take effect from the dates the appointees assume charge of their respective offices.

A retired diplomat, Sandhu's last assignment was as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024. During his diplomatic career spanning more than three decades, he held several key assignments, including serving as India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and in diplomatic postings in Washington, D.C., Frankfurt, and Colombo.
The Lieutenant Governor serves as the constitutional head of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and represents the President of India. The office plays a key role in the administration of the Union Territory and functions in coordination with the elected government.
Reacting to the appointment, Rakesh Malhotra, founder and president of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation, congratulated Sandhu in a post on X.

“Congratulations to Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu on being appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. A distinguished diplomat and seasoned public servant, his vast experience in global diplomacy and governance will greatly benefit the capital,” Malhotra wrote.
He added that Sandhu’s experience would contribute to “serving the people and strengthening Delhi’s growth, governance, and global stature.”
