“Sunny Gupta exemplifies the very best of Coastal Carolina University,” said James J. Winebrake, president of CCU. “His journey is a testament to the unwavering determination of the Chanticleer spirit, and I believe our students will be inspired by the ways he has used his CCU education to boldly innovate, build, and give back. We are proud to welcome Sunny home to commemorate this milestone moment in our graduates’ lives.”

A longtime supporter of the university, Gupta contributed to the naming of the Gupta College of Science in 2019 and established the Sunny and Prerna Gupta Jamboree Alumni Scholarship. He was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in 2008.

Gupta has more than two decades of experience in enterprise software. He co-founded and served as chief executive officer of Apptio. Before Apptio, Gupta was executive vice president of products at Opsware. He also co-founded iConclude and held senior roles at Mercury Interactive, Rational Software, and IBM.

Crediting the university for shaping his career, Gupta said, “Coastal Carolina gave me the opportunity to learn computer science and go on to start three companies and eventually start Apptio. Without the education, faculty, and support from Coastal, I would have never gotten to where I am in my life today.”

He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science with a minor in mathematics from Coastal Carolina University in 1992, completing his studies in three years.

The ceremony is scheduled for May 7 at 6 PM at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.
