Shutdown threatens pay for troops, food aid, flight safety

Leavitt criticised Democrats in Congress for continuing to receive their own salaries while federal employees went unpaid.

The White House Oct. 1 warned that the government shutdown is endangering pay for troops, cutting off food aid for mothers and children, and risking air travel disruptions as thousands of federal workers are forced to report to work without pay.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, at a news conference, laid out the scale of the impact in unusually stark terms. "1.3 million active duty troops will work now without pay," she said. "Critical food assistance for low-income women, infants and children will now lapse. No new mothers or children are allowed to join this critical program because the Democrats have decided to shut down the government."
