Indian student held in elder fraud case

Authorities allege that he participated in a scheme that caused a Rhode Island resident to hand over USD 54,000 in cash.

A 25-year-old Indian citizen living in Massachusetts on a student visa has been ordered detained on a federal criminal complaint for his alleged role in a conspiracy that targeted elderly residents in Rhode Island, Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced Nov. 24.

According to prosecutors, Samyag Uday Doshi, of Dorchester, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Amy E. Moses on Nov. 17 for his initial appearance after being taken into custody. He has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. Authorities allege that he participated in a scheme that caused a Rhode Island resident to hand over USD 54,000 in cash, with an attempted loss amount of more than USD 385,000.
