Indian Americans in Michigan mourn Dr. Venkat Rao as family seeks tougher sentencing

The appeal urges maximum sentencing under the current charge and consideration of upgraded counts.

Late Dr. Venkat Rao / Lalit K Jha

When Dr Venkat Rao left his clinic on June 1, 2023, colleagues said he was thinking ahead to another decade of service. The 68-year-old pulmonologist was struck and fatally injured while taking his evening walk near home. More than two years later, the community is still reeling — and demanding answers.

Rao, described as both a healer and mentor, practised medicine in Genesee County for decades and served on the board of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) for 12 years. His sudden death, family and supporters say, has been compounded by frustration with how prosecutors charged the case.
