The U.S. Congress has intensified its push to block President Donald Trump from escalating attacks on Iran and launching future attacks that are not sanctioned by Congress. Lawmakers are expected to vote this week on the War Powers Resolution, aimed at curbing the executive’s powers.

The demand gained significant momentum after strikes by the United States on Iran, killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and many civilians in the process. Trump has articulated a dual goal behind the attack, promising freedom to Iran’s people and ensuring that Iran does not gain access to nuclear weapons.

The resolution, which has long been pushed by Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, is likely to be introduced this week. Pushing for a quick vote and labeling it a decisive moment, Khanna said on X, “The point of this resolution is to say we do not want another war in the Middle East, or at least Congress should opine on that, should vote on that. And if you're not voting for this War Powers…”

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal described the U.S. escalation as an “unconstitutional war” and remarked that “Congress needs to vote immediately on a war powers resolution to tell the president to stop.” She added that she will be a “strong yes” in the vote.

Jayapal added, “This president promised to end wars — and instead is starting new, unconstitutional wars, wasting American taxpayer dollars and putting our servicemembers at risk. He has no respect for the Constitution, Congress or the rule of law in this country.”

Also echoing a resounding “yes” on the resolution was Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. In a recent statement, Krishnamoorthi described the attacks as an “unauthorized war.”

Demanding strong legislative control over the executive, the Illinois representative added, “The power to go to war is reserved for Congress and Congress alone. As such, I will be voting in support of the War Powers Resolution to rein in this unaccountable president.”

Congressman Ami Bera demanded answers from the Trump administration and said in a statement, “The power to go to war is reserved for Congress and Congress alone. As such, I will be voting in support of the War Powers Resolution to rein in this unaccountable president.”

Rep. Bera also plans to vote “yes” on the resolution. He said, “Next week, the House will vote on a War Powers Resolution on Iran. I will support that resolution.”

Among other top Democrats, Congressman Shri Thanedar also backed the resolution and assured his support. He said on social media, “I am heading to DC to vote ‘HELL YES’ on War Powers Resolution. No more illegal wars.”
