New York's Democratic nominee for the Mayoral Office, Zohran Mamdani, met the city's Indian diaspora community on Sept. 21.

The event, hosted by community leaders Dr. Sheetal Desai and entrepreneur Hiren Chauhan, highlighted the growing voice and influence of the Indian-American community in the civic and political landscape of the United States of America.

Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair. He created bipartisan shockwaves in the USA after winning the democratic primaries in June 2025 on a largely socialist campaign.

During the Sept. 21 gathering with members of the Indian diaspora, Mamdani witnessed a blend of culture, tradition, and civic dialogue. The event was kicked off with the lighting of a lamp, a Hindu tradition symbolizing wisdom, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness.

The program also included an interactive dialogue, where community leaders engaged Mamdani in questions about his vision for New York City. This exchange highlighted the importance of civic participation and the growing influence of Indian Americans in shaping public discourse.

Mamdani shared the news of this gathering and said on X, "It was lovely to meet with Hindu leaders from across NYC yesterday for a wide ranging discussion about building a safer, more inclusive city."

Mamdani recently courted controversy after his past comments allegedly targeting Hindus resurfaced. He had previously labeled New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar as a puppet of “Hindu fascists" and had also protested against the Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya, India, as per the New York Post.
