His responsibilities will include aligning the university's global academic model with India's evolving higher education and industry needs.
The university said Gupta's experience in financial management, operational leadership, and data-driven decision-making will support its efforts to establish a strong presence in India's higher education sector.
Before joining Illinois Tech in February 2026, Gupta served for more than 14 years as vice president, working as chief executive officer, at SRMS Trust, where he led the development and expansion of education and healthcare institutions in Uttar Pradesh.
During his tenure, he oversaw the launch of educational institutions, a multi-specialty hospital, and a diagnostic center while managing large-scale operations.
Earlier in his career, Gupta spent nearly a decade at The World Bank, where he held finance and resource management roles across the Treasury, Africa, and Latin America and Caribbean regions. He also worked as a senior consultant at Arthur Andersen and has experience with Ernst & Young.
Commenting on his appointment, Gupta said, "India's higher education sector is at the cusp of a phenomenal change. Demand for globally accredited industry-integrated programs is the need of the hour.”
"Illinois Tech's model of applied science and engineering education is built on industry integration, which aligns with what students in India are looking for. The focus will be on building a university with genuine local relevance. I look forward to working with the team to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation, inclusivity, and long-term impact."
Gupta is known for leading cross-functional teams, navigating complex organizations, and engaging diverse stakeholders. The university said his collaborative leadership style and focus on measurable outcomes will be important as it builds its operations in India.
The appointment comes as international universities expand their presence in India amid growing demand for globally recognized, industry-focused academic programs.
Illinois Tech said it is the first American university authorized to establish a degree-granting campus in India, positioning Illinois Tech Mumbai as a significant milestone in the country's higher education landscape.
Applications for the inaugural Fall 2026 intake are now open, with additional details on admissions, academic programs, and faculty appointments expected in the coming months.
