U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on May 13 arrested an Indian national accused in a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a 4-year-old boy in Fresno, California, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.
According to DHS, Aman Kumar was arrested by the Fresno Sheriff’s Department on April 29, a day after the alleged crash, and charged with felony hit-and-run causing death or injury. However, he was later released from local custody, federal authorities claimed.

Kumar, an undocumented immigrant from India allegedly entered the United States illegally through California in 2023 and was later released by federal authorities during the Biden administration, DHS said.
In a statement, Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis criticized California’s sanctuary policies and accused state officials of releasing “this criminal illegal alien from jail back onto the streets.”
“This monster who almost killed a 4-year-old boy has been charged with a felony hit and run,” Bis said. “Thanks to the brave men and women of ICE law enforcement, this criminal illegal alien was arrested outside a criminal court.”
According to DHS, California jurisdictions currently hold more than 33,000 individuals with active ICE detainers. The department said those cases include charges or convictions related to homicide, assault, burglary, robbery, drug offenses, weapons offenses and sexual crimes.
ICE Director Todd Lyons had earlier sent a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta urging the state to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and honor ICE detainer requests, DHS said.
Officials said the child in this case was hospitalized in critical but stable condition following the April 28 incident and is expected to survive.
