The Canadian National Council of Hindus (CNCH) welcomed renewed efforts to strengthen  Canada and India ties, during Prime Minister’s Mark Carney’s recent visit to India.

Describing the relationship as important for economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties, the organization said Canada and India share longstanding connections rooted in pluralism, rule of law, education exchange, and trade.

It noted that India, home to the world’s largest Hindu population, has deep heritage and cultural links with many Canadians of Indian origin, who are among the country’s largest and most vibrant diaspora communities and have contributed to economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion through work in public service, business, academia, healthcare, arts, and civil society.

“Canada-India engagement must be pragmatic, principled, and forward-looking,” said Rajiv Walia, general secretary of the Canadian National Council of Hindus. “Hindu-Canadians are deeply invested in the strength of Canada’s democracy and in stable international partnerships that advance shared prosperity and reinforce mutual respect.”

The organization said it supports constructive dialogue between the two countries grounded in mutual respect, democratic principles, and shared prosperity.

The statement comes at a time when Ottawa and New Delhi are attempting to rebuild diplomatic ties following a period of strain. Relations deteriorated in 2023 after Canada alleged India’s involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist activist on Canadian soil, an accusation India denied, leading to diplomatic expulsions and a suspension of visa services.

Recent meetings between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have focused on resetting the relationship through cooperation in trade, energy, and critical minerals, as well as negotiations toward a comprehensive economic partnership agreement aimed at boosting bilateral trade significantly in the coming years.

The Canadian National Council of Hindus said it will continue engaging policymakers and community leaders to support Canada–India relations in a manner consistent with Canadian democratic values.

The organization represents the interests of Canada’s Hindu community, which numbers more than a million people nationwide and advocates for political participation, religious freedom, and greater representation in public life.
