California Gov appoints Shweta Maurya to data innovation role
The former Chime and Amazon executive will join the state agency responsible for improving California's public services through data and technology.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Aug. 5 announced the appointment of Indian American mechanical engineer Shweta Maurya as senior product manager at the California Office of Data and Innovation.
The office works with state departments to improve public services by using data, technology and human-centered design to make government services more accessible and effective for Californians.

A resident of Campbell, Maurya, most recently served as senior manager of strategy and operations at financial technology company Chime, where she also held the roles of staff program manager and senior program manager in the program management office between 2019 and 2025.
Before joining Chime, Maurya was a program manager for books and Kindle at Amazon from 2017 to 2019. In that role, she led product initiatives, managed rewards experiments, oversaw A/B testing of machine learning models, and developed customer feedback mechanisms to improve products. She earlier worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Randall Lamb from 2013 to 2015.
Maurya co-founded the venture Scoot Closer in January 2025 and has been on a personal sabbatical since January 2026.
She earned a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado.
The position does not require California State Senate confirmation and carries an annual salary of $154,860.
