Atri Kotal mesmerizes Atlanta with Hindustani Classical music

Kotal was trained by the likes of Late Pandit Biresh Roy and Ustad Jainul Abedin.

Hindustani classical vocalist Atri Kotal presented a spell-binding musical performance in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sept. 14.

The Hindustani classical music and ghazals performed by the Kolkata-born vocalist blended tradition, emotion, and nostalgia, further cementing her position as a powerful voice in the realm of Hindustani classical music.

Kotal specialized in Khayal singing, and is a National Scholar recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Having been trained by Late Pandit Biresh Roy and Ustad Jainul Abedin, Kotal also holds a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Calcutta. Additionally, she has also received semi classical (Thumri) singing taalim from Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty for two years.

The evening was hosted by Mustafa Ajmeri, an ardent supporter of Indian art in Atlanta, alongside a passionate team comprising Seema Hanji, Neeraj Bhatia, Sanjay Hanji, Hirak Dutta, Krishan Goyal, Sachin, and Karishma. Seema Hanji, serving as emcee, brought warmth and insight to the program, ensuring a seamless flow that fostered a personal and engaging connection with the audience.

“This concert wasn’t just about music—it was about community, identity, and passing on a living tradition to the next generation,” Ajmeri said.

Atri Kotal was joined by two accomplished musicians, Shri Anjaneya Shastry on tabla and Shri Manish Vyas on harmonium, whose seamless synergy and sensitive accompaniment amplified the brilliance of every note, creating an exquisite backdrop for Kotal’s captivating vocal performance.

Kotal began with bandishes in Raga Yaman and Bihag, she then transitioned into a series of ghazals, honoring music legends like Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hasan, Begum Akhtar, Noor Jehan, Jagjit Singh, Shobha Gurtu, and Farida Khanum.

A special segment was dedicated to Bollywood songs rooted in classical ragas, with renditions of Thumri and Dadra in the style of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

Accepting the requests from the audience, Kotal also performed 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' and a beloved Bengali number, 'Jochhona Koreche Aari'.
