Multi-faith leaders back Mamdani for NYC Mayor during Diwali push

Endorsements poured in for Mamdani from across faiths, including Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, and Jainism.

As the New York Mayor election nears, the Democratic candidate, Zohran Mamdani, is running the last leg of his campaign. Diwali marked another eventful display of multi-faith support pouring into the Mamdani camp with a coalition of over 60 interfaith religious leaders and faith-based organizers coming together to endorse Mamdani for Mayor of New York City.

Announcing this show of multifaith unity in support of Zohran, Hindus for Zohran, a campaign affinity group described him as a candidate who represents hope, integrity, and justice for all New Yorkers.

Endorsements poured in for Mamdani from across faiths, including Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, and Jainism.

Sunita Viswanath, a Brooklyn-based Hindu faith leader who helped create Hindus for Zohran, said in a statement, “We need a Mayor that is fearless in telling the truth; that prioritizes the neediest among us; and that brings us all together rather than widens divides. That Mayor is Zohran. I’ve never been more excited about a candidate.”

Rev. Abhi Janamanchi, a Hindu Unitarian Universalist leader, noted, “Zohran’s vision is bold and compassionate, and his leadership invites all of us into the work of repair. He has my full and enthusiastic support.”

Mamdani also received support from Muslim and Jewish leaders. Extending support from the Muslim community, Imam Shamsi Ali said, “Zohran will be the mayor for all New Yorkers. Under his administration, he will make NYC a better, prosperous and more compassionate city.”

Rabbi Michael Feinberg also echoed similar sentiments and said, “Mamdani brings hope to NYC politics, to create a just city for all.”

Mamdani's support base runs beyond his New York constituency, support also poured in from India with Indian Hindu leader Swami Viswabadrananda Shakthibodhi saying that “Real and ethical modern man should support Democratic aspects.” Mamdani also received support from India's Christian community, with Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ remarking, "New York, the United States, and the world need brilliant leaders with heart like Zohran Mamdani.”

Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa are vying to replace Democratic Mayor Eric Adams in the upcoming Nov. 4 elections.
