Indian-origin student wins Duke University graduate student award

Sharma will be honored at the society’s annual ceremony on Feb. 9.

Duke University has awarded Indian-origin student Pratham Sharma the 2026 Samuel DuBois Cook Society Graduate Student Award.

Sharma, a master of engineering management (MEM) student at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering, was selected for his work in building inclusive student communities  across campus.

The award will be presented at the Samuel DuBois Cook Society’s annual ceremony on Feb. 9, where former Dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences Laurie Patton and four other faculty, staff and student leaders from the Duke community will also be honored. 

Each year, the society recognizes Duke staff, administrators, faculty, students and local community members whose work reflects the social activism and leadership legacy of Samuel DuBois Cook, the first African-American faculty member at the University.

Sharma, currently serves as a MEM ambassador, a Pratt Peers leader and a member of the University Judicial Board, where he represents graduate students from the Pratt School of Engineering.

He has worked with the graduate student professional and services team, student engagement committees and Pratt leadership to support students from diverse backgrounds and to strengthen connections between domestic and international students.

Before joining Duke, Sharma earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, where he graduated with first division honors and was involved in several technical and entrepreneurship student organizations. 

He has professional experience across IT, software and education technology, and has also worked in product marketing and product management roles.
