Indian American entrepreneur and Republican gubernatorial contender Vivek Ramaswamy secured the endorsement of the Ohio State Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters.

The endorsement is significant as the union largely in support of democratic candidates has lent its backing for the Republican by splitting its endorsement between him and Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown.

“Grateful for the endorsement from Ohio’s respected Plumbers & Pipefitters union. This is HUGE in OH. Really appreciate their willingness to think beyond partisan boundaries,” Ramaswamy wrote on X, thanking the union for its support.

The Ohio State Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters is part of the United Association, which represents thousands of plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters across the U.S. and Canada. In Ohio, the group oversees apprenticeship training, collective bargaining, and workplace safety standards across multiple locals, including Cleveland’s Local 55 and Columbus’s Local 189.

The unions have historically played an active role in shaping state labor policy and political endorsements, dating back to disputes over workplace rights and racial equity, such as the Cleveland Convention Center labor dispute in the 1960s.

Ramaswamy has also been endorsed by the Cleveland Building & Construction Trades Council, which represents about 14,000 construction workers across Greater Cleveland. Founded in 1913, the coalition of 29 affiliated unions confirmed its support through the Ohio Republican Party, continuing its influential role in state politics on workplace safety, project labor agreements, and economic development.

Ramaswamy, a Cincinnati native and biotech entrepreneur who ran in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, has quickly consolidated his party’s support. In May, the Ohio GOP’s State Central Committee endorsed him by a 60–3 vote, the earliest such endorsement ever given to a non-incumbent candidate.

Attorney General Dave Yost has since exited the primary, citing Ramaswamy’s strength, while Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel is still weighing a possible bid.
Financially, Ramaswamy holds a commanding lead. His campaign reported raising $9.7 million in its first four months, the largest sum ever in that period for an Ohio gubernatorial candidate. A super PAC supporting him has received $10 million from billionaire investor Jeff Yass.
