Pratim Biswas to lead Vanderbilt University engineering institute
Biswas will lead the university’s engineering innovation initiatives, strengthen global engagement, and expand research and industry partnerships.

Vanderbilt University has appointed renowned Indian American engineer and aerosol scientist Pratim Biswas as the inaugural executive director of the Institute for Engineering Innovation at its West Palm Beach campus.
The University also named Biswas executive director for global engagement at the Vanderbilt School of Engineering, and he will also hold the Stevenson Chair in Engineering and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering effective Aug. 16.
A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Biswas is internationally recognized for pioneering contributions to aerosol science, with research spanning energy and environmental nanotechnology, solar energy, air quality and medicine.

Biswas joins Vanderbilt from the University of Miami, where he served as dean of the College of Engineering. He previously held leadership positions at Washington University in St. Louis, including assistant vice chancellor for international programs and chair of the Department of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering.
“Pratim Biswas brings an exceptional record of academic leadership and scholarly achievement, making him uniquely well-positioned to help shape Vanderbilt Engineering’s innovation vision in West Palm Beach,” said Krish Roy, dean of the Vanderbilt School of Engineering.
Biswas said he was excited to lead the institute as Vanderbilt expands into one of the nation's fastest-growing innovation hubs. “The opportunity to bring together research, education, and industry—and to work with great colleagues at Vanderbilt University—to solve important challenges and create meaningful impact is what drew me to this role, and I look forward to helping build that future.”
An accomplished researcher and inventor, Biswas holds 17 patents and has secured more than $50 million in research funding from agencies including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Department of Energy. He has co-founded two startup companies and authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications.
A distinguished alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Biswas earned his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and his master's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
