One of Ohio’s largest labor coalitions, the Cleveland Building & Construction Trades Council, has endorsed Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in the state’s 2026 gubernatorial race.

The coalition, which includes about 29 affiliated unions and represents roughly 14,000 construction workers across Greater Cleveland, announced its decision through the Ohio Republican Party.

Founded in 1913, the Cleveland Building & Construction Trades Council represents trade unions across Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties. It has historically played an influential role in Ohio politics by endorsing candidates on issues tied to workplace safety, project labor agreements, and economic development.

The endorsement adds to Ramaswamy’s growing support within the state Republican Party. In May, he secured the Ohio GOP’s official nomination in a Central Committee vote that ended 60–3, the earliest such endorsement ever given to a non-incumbent candidate in the state.

Ramaswamy also has the backing of President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, U.S. Senators Rick Scott, Marsha Blackburn, and Mike Lee, along with statewide officials such as Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Treasurer Robert Sprague. A majority of Republican legislators in Ohio’s General Assembly are also behind him.

Ramaswamy, a Cincinnati native and biotech entrepreneur who ran in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, has reported raising $9.7 million in the first four months of his campaign — more than any gubernatorial candidate in Ohio history during that period.

Campaign filings show participation from over 40,000 individual donors, with about 80 percent contributing under $1,000. A super PAC supporting him has received $10 million from billionaire investor Jeff Yass. His Democratic opponent, former Ohio Health Department Director Amy Acton, has raised $1.35 million.

The 2026 gubernatorial race is open, with Republican Governor Mike DeWine term-limited. Attorney General Dave Yost and Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel are considered possible Republican contenders but have not declared their candidacies.

On the Democratic side, Acton is currently the only announced candidate, though other names, including former Congressman Tim Ryan, are being discussed. The general election is scheduled for November 2026.
