The American Telugu Association (ATA) and the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create internship opportunities for Indian-origin students in the United States.

The MoU, signed by IITH director B. S. Murty and ATA president Jayanth Challa, established a collaborative framework effective from Sept. 25.

ATA will nominate or recommend students for internships at IITH in accordance with the agreement. The scope includes summer internships, short-term internships ranging from one week to three months, half-yearly placements, and year-long internships.

“This is the first time I am signing an MoU with an association rather than an academic institution,” said Murty in a video statement. “It is a milestone in strengthening India–America relations through ATA. While internships are just the starting point, we want to go beyond and create a greater ecosystem where both countries flourish.”

ATA called the pact “the first of its kind,” emphasizing its importance in reversing the usual flow of students. “Every time we talk to U.S. senators and congressmen, the discussion is about students coming from India to America. This MoU is ATA’s effort to encourage American students to study in India,” the association’s president said.

During the ceremony, ATA honored Prof. Murty, who was recently reappointed as director of IITH for another five-year term. He also presented an overview of IITH’s academic and research facilities, which ATA described as “world-class” and ideally suited for hosting U.S.-based students.

The three-year agreement, with scope for extension, also opens avenues for joint research and enhanced U.S.–India people-to-people ties.

India's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks IITH, established 16 years ago, seventh in engineering and sixth in innovation.
