Yogesh Vohra to lead UAB arts and science college
Under his leadership, the school introduced new graduate programs and expanded international collaborations.

Indian-American physicist and materials scientist Yogesh K. Vohra took over as the interim dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s College of Arts and Sciences this month as the university looks for a permanent dean.
University of Alabama at Birmingham provost and senior vice president Janet Woodruff-Borden announced Vohra’s appointment after consultations with college leadership on the institution’s strengths, future direction, and the qualities needed in its next permanent dean.

“Dr. Vohra’s record of research leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration make him ideally suited to guide the College of Arts and Sciences in the coming months,” Woodruff-Borden said.
Prior to this, Vohra served as associate dean for Research and Innovation in the College of Arts and Sciences and is a University Scholar. Earlier this year, he was named Distinguished Professor in UAB’s department of physics.
An internationally recognized physicist and materials scientist, Vohra is known for his work in high-pressure physics, synthetic diamond technologies and nanostructured biomedical materials. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and holds six U.S. patents.
He is the founding director of the UAB Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration and leads several interdisciplinary research initiatives, including the National Nuclear Security Administration-funded Center of Excellence.
He also directs multiple federally funded education and workforce development programs, including National Science Foundation and NASA-supported Research Experiences for Undergraduates initiatives and a U.S. Department of Education Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) graduate training grant.
Vohra joined UAB in 1992 after completing postdoctoral research at Cornell University. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from the University of Delhi and a doctorate in physics from the University of Bombay before undertaking postdoctoral research at the University of Paderborn in Germany and Cornell University.
Over more than three decades at UAB, Vohra has supervised dozens of graduate students and secured research funding from agencies including the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, NASA, Army Research Office and the U.S. Department of Education. He is also a chartered physicist and fellow of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom.
