Johns Hopkins names Bhaven Sampat as distinguished professor
The Columbia-trained economist will research science funding, innovation, and public policy.

Indian-origin economist Bhaven Sampat was appointed Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Science and Innovation Policy at Johns Hopkins University.
Sampat, who most recently served at Arizona State University's School for the Future of Innovation in Society and School of Public Affairs after spending much of his career at Columbia University, has joined Johns Hopkins' Promoting and Governing Technological Advances Bloomberg Distinguished Professorship cluster.

He will hold joint appointments at the School of Government and Policy and the Carey Business School.
An economist by training, Sampat's research focuses on the economics, law, history, and political economy of science and technology. His work has examined U.S. and global patent policy, publicly funded science, pharmaceutical innovation, and the role of government in advancing scientific research.
His current projects include studying the long-term impact of World War II research on U.S. innovation, pharmaceutical patent policy and access to medicines, and the economics of the National Institutes of Health, the world's largest public funder of biomedical research.
Speaking to the university press, Sampat said his work is guided by "the ultimate goal of solving public problems and improving social outcomes."
He said the United States is at a pivotal moment for science policy as the post-World War II framework governing federally funded research faces growing challenges.
Welcoming the appointment, William Howell, inaugural dean of the School of Government and Policy, said Sampat's scholarship comes at a time when "profound questions are being asked about the future of the research university and the returns from public investment in basic science."
Carey Business School Dean Alex Triantis described Sampat's research portfolio as "groundbreaking, interdisciplinary, and highly impactful," adding that his expertise will help advance university-wide discussions on how scientific research shapes health and society.
Sampat earned bachelor's, master's, M.Phil., and doctoral degrees in economics from Columbia University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in health policy research at the University of Michigan.
He is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and has published in leading journals, including Science, Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, and The American Economic Review.
