Sounding smart makes you weak: Community leader advises immigrant professionals

An Indian American Illinois public official, Priyankka Deo, said that “sounding smart” in U.S. workplaces can be perceived as a sign of weakness, advising immigrant professionals to adopt more direct communication styles.

According to Deo, an operational excellence manager at the Illinois Department of Central Management Services’ Office of Operational Excellence, many first-generation professionals rely on detailed and analytical explanations to demonstrate competence at the workplace.
